Scaling & Root Planing

To treat the early effects of gum disease, we’ll perform a two-step procedure known as scaling and root planing. First, we’ll clear all of the plaque and tartar that have built up on the teeth, all the way down through their roots underneath the gumline. Then, we smooth out these root surfaces, encouraging them to reattach to the gums and creating an environment where bacteria have difficulty thriving.

Antibiotic Therapy

In some cases, we may supplement scaling and root planing with antibiotic therapy. Even our advanced technology might not be able to eliminate bacteria in the hard-to-reach pockets in your gums. That’s why we might apply a topical antibiotic to your gums, which gradually spreads throughout the tissue to kill any lingering bacteria. We may also prescribe a round of oral antibiotics for good measure.
